At a recent Lunch and Learn event, Dr. Joseph Mossad, a Primary Care Physician at Salem Township Hospital Rural Health Primary Clinic, addressed the topic “The Truth About Vitamins: Benefits, Risks, and Smart Choices.”

Dr. Mossad explored the use of vitamins and supplements among older adults, discussing their benefits and risks. He covered scientific research, brand comparisons, and how these supplements can support conditions such as arthritis, bone health, and memory. Dr. Mossad emphasized that while supplements like vitamin D, B12, calcium, and omega-3 may help address common deficiencies, they should not replace a nutritious diet. Their effectiveness varies depending on individual health needs and scientific evidence.

The presentation concluded with key reminders:

“Supplements can be helpful but are not a cure-all,” said Dr. Mossad. He advised prioritizing a balanced diet first and choosing reputable brands with third-party testing. Importantly, he urged individuals to “always consult your doctor before starting new supplements.”

Salem Township Hospital’s Outpatient Care Coordinators Shelley Rose (BSN, RN) and Gloria Hawkins (RN) organize these free Lunch & Learn discussions monthly to educate the public.
