The 2026 Lunch & Learn series at Salem Township Hospital began in a new, larger venue this year, reflecting increased community interest. The first event took place at the First Christian Church gym, where attendees were provided lunch and refreshments by STH Nutritional Services while listening to a presentation from Dr. Kevin Claffey, general surgeon.

Dr. Claffey focused his talk on the importance of colon cancer screening. He shared personal motivation for his advocacy: “his own mother battled colon cancer twice, and Dr. Claffey is diligent about getting screened himself.” He highlighted that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide but also noted its preventability through early detection. According to Dr. Claffey, individuals aged 45 or older should consider screening every ten years. Modern colonoscopies are described as safe and effective at preventing cancer by removing polyps during the procedure.

Dr. Claffey has performed over 20,000 colonoscopies throughout his career and encouraged those interested to schedule an appointment with Salem Township Hospital without needing a referral unless required by insurance.

The next Lunch & Learn session is scheduled for March 12 and will feature Caroline Boehne, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist at Salem Township Hospital.
