The price of local government in 2016: Marion County

The Marion County budget was $17.35 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 5.9 percent from 2015, when the county spent $16.38 million.

Marion County has a population of 38,140.

Since 2001, the Marion County budget has fallen by 20.5 percent, from $21.81 million. The county population has fallen 8.5 percent over the same period, from 41,691.

Salaries accounted for 31.6 percent of county spending in 2016. Marion County property taxpayers paid $5.49 million for 140 full-time employees and 37 part-time employees.
