Illinois State House District 95 issued the following announcement on Oct. 1.
State Representative Avery Bourne (R-Morrisonville) has been named to serve on the newly created House Firearm Public Awareness Task Force. Rep. Bourne was one of 12 House Republicans chosen by Republican Leader Jim Durkin for the 24 member task force recently established by House Speaker Michael Madigan. The chair of the task force says the purpose of the group is to review the issue of gun violence and make recommendations for reducing such violence in Illinois.
This is just the most recent group created in the Illinois House to study gun violence and gun laws. Rep. Bourne previously served on the School Safety Task Force and has been a strong advocate for firearm owners and the Second Amendment throughout her tenure in the Illinois House.
This past spring session, the Illinois House passed Senate Bill 1966 that would increase FOID card fees by 400% and require FOID cardholders to submit their fingerprints to the Illinois State Police. This bill was supported by a majority of the Democratic members on the task force. Rep. Bourne voted no. This bill stalled in the Senate, but could be voted on in the upcoming Veto Session in October or November.
“Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, and yet Democrats in the majority propose new laws and regulations every year that go after law-abiding gun owners.” Rep. Bourne said. “If we are going to get to the true causes of gun violence in Illinois, we should not infringe upon the rights of those who are using firearms safely and legally. Instead, we need to have a healthy debate about the illegal guns used by criminals, we need to make sure that gun crimes are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and we must make sure that our current gun laws are being enforced. My hope is that this task force will develop solutions that will actually reduce crime instead of continuing to punish law-abiding gun owners.”
