Illinois State House District 96 issued the following announcement on June 22.

DECATUR, Ill. – As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect Illinoisans statewide, state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur backed efforts to expand access to medical care services, including telehealth services and affordable health care for children.

“The need for reform within our state’s health care system has been made even more apparent by this devastating crisis,” said Scherer. “Access to health care services are vital in our fight against COVID-19, and critical toward improving the overall health of residents, not only in our community, but statewide.”

Scherer voted in favor of Senate Bill 1864, bipartisan legislation that gives expanded access to telehealth and mental health services, in addition to proving eligibility for services, such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), easier. This legislation also directs state agencies charged with regulating insurance and health care to explore short-term and long-term solutions for making health care more affordable, and report actionable recommendations to the General Assembly and the governor.

“Families should not have to fear financial burdens caused by access to critical medical services they need to remain healthy,” said Scherer. “While more work is being done to keep our children, families and seniors safe from the current health crisis, I will continue to lead by advocating for the resources and services our communities need.”
