Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) is encouraging the community to donate used cell phones for soldiers.

Turner's goal is to gather new and gently used phones for use by the troops, according to a press release from the senator.

“I can think of no better way to support those who serve to protect our freedoms than giving them a reliable way to call home” Turner said in a press release on her official website. “This is a great program that allows our troops to stay connected to their families during the holiday seasons and beyond.”

Turner has recently had a busy schedule, including being present for the signing of the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act as well.

"Honored to stand with the Gov. as he signed the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act" Turner posted to Twitter on Nov. 16. "This legislation will transform the industry, and communities, throughout IL and beyond. Left Belvidere and immediately convened a meeting in Decatur to start job creation!!!!"

Turner has also been active in her community.

"Great time today at the Major Clay Community Outreach 1st Annual Brunch and Mural Dedication! Good food and good company!!!  #il48!" Turner posted to Twitter on Nov. 14.

The Cellphones for Soldiers program started in 2004 and has given soldiers more than 400 million minutes of free talk time. It has recycled more than 20 million cell phones, reducing the impact on landfills. It has mailed approximately 2,500 calling cards each week.

The program also acquires tablets and MP3 players for soldiers, according to a press release from Turner's office. The donations are tax decuctable. Since July 2012, Helping Heroes Home has assisted more than 5,000 veterans and their families with emergency funding.

Donations will be accepted at Turner’s Decatur office at 1210 S. Jasper St. and her Carlinville office at 130 East Main St. Suite B. Both offices are accepting donations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through Nov. 30.
