HSHS St. Francis Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.

HSHS St. Francis Hospital colleagues recently completed their summer Instruments of Peace Project to assist families with school-aged children who are clients at the hospital’s St. Clare Center Food Pantry.

Joanne VanLeer, director of radiology and mission integration at the hospital said, “The great teamwork and caring spirit of the colleagues at St. Francis will help more than 35 area children. We filled each backpack with the exact supplies required for the specific school and grade. Through more than $400 in additional donations, we also purchased paper, pencils, pens, markers, notebooks, crayons, paints, earbuds, rulers, calculators, Kleenex and binders to distribute at the food pantry.”

VanLeer explained that the hospital has several Instruments of Peace Projects each year to help area residents. The projects focus on those in need within our communities. They are called Instruments of Peace to honor the hospital’s patron saint – St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis wrote the peace prayer which includes the line: make me an instrument of your peace.

This past spring, a group of colleagues raked leaves and cleaned yards for elderly residents. “Whether it is giving their time or donating money or supplies, our colleagues always come through to assist those in need,” VanLeer said.

This back-pack project was a group effort at the hospital. The junior volunteer group helped shop for items and assisted in organizing and packing the bags. Pictured are the group of colleagues and junior volunteers who helped fill the food pantry truck with the backpacks and school supplies.
