City of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee met August 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

The meeting was called to order at 4:20 p.m. by Bill Smith with the pledge of allegiance.

Members Present: Burris, Helpingstine, Smith, Young and Sensel

Attendance: Kala Lambert, Economic Development, City of Centralia

Public Comment- none

Minutes-

A motion was made by Vernell Burris and Seconded by Mike Young to approve the minutes from the June 21, 2018, all in favor, motion carried.

Treasurers Report –

Kala presented a financial report with a balance of 4,330.06 as of July 31, 2018, includes no revenue and expenses of 907.50 which included expenses for the parade and the purchase of flags. Kala stated that the flags purchased were from the same supplier as the special custom ordered City Flag and cost $6.50 per flag instead of $20. Ann returned the flags that she had picked up from the last purchase and stated DAR refused to put the embroidered names on an American Flag made in China. Ann stated that DAR had raised enough money to buy 100 flags that would cost about $2100. Members commented that they would see if their organizations would be willing to make a donation also. Wayne Sensel stated he would check on a price with a company they use out of Indiana. Kala stated that other expenses that are not in this report but scheduled to be paid are brackets for $785.50 from Carrot top and $250 for straps from Carquest. A motion was made by Wayne Sensel and Seconded by Mike Young to accept the treasurers report as provided, all in favor, motion carried.

New Business –

Members discussed the 4th of July parade. Vernell commented that chairs are needed around the awards ceremony area. Kala asked if the park was in good condition and Mike Young commented that it was.

Ann presented a report on the flag inventory. She stated that they had to retire 52 flags, took 12 to the cleaners, originally had 275 flags with names and they have 105 names that can be moved or have been moved to flags that have been flown. They have 25 new names. She stated that DAR will be sitting at IGA this weekend to collect funds. Of the 500 flags purchased, they only have 260 in good shape. Ann stated that they went to the American Legion and to the VFW requesting 6 names to add to flags.

There was no discussion on the Korean War Monument designs as Judy was not present.

With no further business to discuss a motion was made by Butch Mathus and Seconded by Jim Murphy to adjourn the meeting, all in favor, motion carried.
