The price of local government in 2017: City of Salem

The City of Salem budget was $16.72 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $4,161 per household.

That's a decrease of 27.5 percent from 2016, when the city spent $23.07 million, or $5,740 per household.

Salem has 4,019 households and a population of 7,485.

Since 2001, the City of Salem budget has fallen by 24.6 percent, from $22.17 million. The city population has fallen four percent over the same period, from 7,800.

Salaries accounted for 23.2 percent of city spending in 2017. Salem property taxpayers paid $3.89 million for 65 full-time employees and 60 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 85 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees, and spent $3.95 million.
