HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese issued the following announcement on June 25.
HSHS Southern Illinois Division (SID) hospitals recently held a Professional Development Transition Ceremony and reception for 12 Registered Nurses who completed the RN Residency Program and five graduates of St. Elizabeth’s new Patient Care Tech (PCT) program.
“As teaching facilities, the HSHS Southern Illinois Division hospitals continue to expand professional development opportunities to offer innovative, high-quality clinical programs for the region,” said Regina Peterson, DNP, RN, Division Director of Clinical Education and Professional Development, SID Float Pool and SID RN Residency.
Transitioning RN Residents include:
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon: Chelsea Haley (Emergency Department), Devani Gonzalez-Sieve and Taylor Rose (Intensive Care Unit), Linda Grove (Medical/Surgical Unit), Heather Rahm (Telemetry A) and Nick Bauder (Telemetry B).
HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham: Brandon Stuber and Mollie Glenn (Emergency Department) and Anna Habing and Brandi Currie (Medical/Surgical Unit).
HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese: Max Etter (Emergency Department) and Colleen Smith (Inpatient Unit).
Graduating Patient Care Techs at St. Elizabeth’s include:
Brianna Brown, Abby Eilers and Alexis Lamar (Telemetry A)

“We thank all the graduates for choosing our SID programs for their career development and we look forward to their continued growth and bright health care careers ahead,” said Peterson.
Star Preceptors from each hospital and program were additionally recognized and thanked for their selfless commitment and dedication in guiding the participants of the programs.
Components of the RN Residency Program curriculum include 75% clinical time and 25% classroom time. Individual preceptor teams, as well as individual mentors, are assigned to each participant. This innovative, one-on-one attention prevents novice nurses from feeling overwhelmed in their first year of work. Debriefing and colleague support groups are also provided throughout the residency and during their first year of nursing, which helps residents to progress to high competence levels quickly, safely and efficiently.
The Patient Care Tech (PCT) program is an eight-week program, for people with the passion and desire to work in the health care, to receive paid, on-the-job training that combines classroom education with hands-on clinical experience. PCTs function in the same role as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in that they help assist patients with their activities of daily living such as bathing, oral hygiene, eating, transporting throughout the facility for testing, walking in the halls, and toileting. They also work closely to collaborate with the patient care team, including the nurses, physicians, therapists and social workers to ensure that the patients basic needs are met and that each patient received the safest, highest quality care.
Upon successful completion of each program, the participants have full-time careers with a HSHS Southern Illinois Division hospital.
