HSHS Holy Family Hospital issued the following announcement on July 29.
HSHS Holy Family Hospital has announced plans to redesign the Women and Infants service line to offer a regional approach to services provided to expectant parents and their newborns. The new care model will allow expectant mothers to remain near their hometown for pre and post obstetrical care with delivery and post-partum hospital care taking place at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. “With the redesign, expectant mothers will have 19 of their 20 prenatal visits close to home in their physician’s office. If lab work or an ultrasound is needed, they will still come to our local hospital for those outpatient services,” explained Carol Dodson, chief nursing officer at Holy Family Hospital. “When mom is ready to deliver, she will travel to HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese for delivery and care of the newborn.”
The Women and Infants Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital is designated as a Level II perinatal care facility. As part of this designation, they offer neonatal nurse practitioners on-site 24/7 and the expertise of SLUCare neonatologists from SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital through telemedicine technology for critical care situations. St. Joseph’s is also a baby-friendly birth facility offering the optimum level of care for mothers and their babies.
Holy Family Hospital has submitted a Certificate of Exemption (COE) to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board requesting approval to discontinue the Women and Infants inpatient service. Following their approval, Holy Family will transition deliveries to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. Colleagues who are employed on this unit will be offered vacant positions which are being held for them.
“The decision to redesign this service line came after several months of in-depth evaluation and discussion with our board of directors and local physician partners,” stated Kelly Sager, president and CEO. “The redesign aligns with our commitment to elevate the services offered at our hospital through improvement projects like the $3.8 million surgery renovation, the expansion of cardiac rehabilitation and the addition of our heart failure clinic.
