Pana Community Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.
Pana Community Hospital recognized the need for transportation to health care appointments well over 25 + years ago when Faith-In-Action, supported by Pana Community Hospital, was established and set into motion providing rides to doctors and dentist appointments and other personal appointments by FIA volunteers. Additionally, Faith-In-Action offered several other service options such as light housekeeping, light yard work, ramp building, friendly visits and phone calls to shut-ins. Through the years, the FIA volunteer base decreased and the need for transportation to doctor’s appointment dramatically increased. The FIA Board realized that the transportation services provided by the final few volunteers would not support the increased transportation requests effectively plus the fact the two existing vans were wearing out and needed to be replaced. In 2018, the Faith-In-Action Board Members voted to disband and transition specifically the transportation services and its investments into a new service for Pana Community Hospital patients named PCH Transport Services. The decision to purchase a new wheelchair van and passenger van was the first order of business for PCH Transport Services made possible by the generosity of the Ruby June Munzenmaier Estate.
Ruby June Munzenmaier was a philanthropist and avid supporter of Faith-In-Action among many of her other passions and interest within the community of Pana. Upon Ruby June’s death on December 3rd, 2010, Pana Community Hospital Faith-In-Action was named as a beneficiary to Ruby June’s estate receiving a very generous donation for the work being done by Faith-In-Action under the direction of the FIA Board. Ruby June was born June 22nd, 1917, the daughter of Gotlieb Erhart and Margaret Defenthaler Munzenmaier. She was a graduate of Pana Township High School and Greenville College. She lived her entire life in Pana. Ruby June taught second grade at Lincoln School for many years. She was a member of the United in Faith Church, Pana. She had been church organist at the United Church of Christ for many years. She was also a member of Tower Hill Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, 50 year member of the Arcana Chapter, Order of Easter Star where she was Past Worthy Matron, Christian County Retired Teacher’s Assn, Illinois Retired Teachers Assn and a life time member of Pana Community Hospital Association.
The availability of the PCH Transport Services to the PCH patient base has been invaluable to assure patients are arriving at their doctor’s appointments at Pana Community Hospital and the PCH clinics located in Assumption, Ramsey and Nokomis in a timely and safe manner. Additionally, PCH patients are transported to their specialist in Springfield, Decatur and other outlying locations. PCH Patient Transport accepts donation to defray the cost associated with transportation services but does not charge the patient. The PCH Transport Services are facilitated by two part-time drivers and continues to receive periodic volunteer driver hours when needed.
