City of Greenville issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.
Video surveillance is one of the best methods for apprehending criminals and convicting suspects who are caught in the act of committing a crime. The Greenville Police Department is initiating a Private Video Surveillance Camera Registration Program for residents or businesses with a video surveillance system. This is a voluntary community—police partnership with the goal to provide additional resources for the police department to serve and protect the community.
This program allows residents and businesses to register the locations of the OUTDOOR video surveillance systems with the Greenville Police Department. The police will not have access to your cameras or security system. If a crime is committed in the view of a privately owned security camera, the Greenville Police Department will search the registration data for nearby cameras and contact the owner with a request for the camera’s footage.
Through the program, the Greenville Police Department will be able to directly contact registrants who have video surveillance in an area in which a crime occurred. Police may ask registrants to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time for video that may show activity involved with a crime, such as a getaway car or the direction that a person of interest was headed. If any video evidence is found, the resident or business owner can contact the Greenville Police Department at 618-664-2131 to make arrangements for retrieval.
