Greenville City Manager Dave Willey recently sought to allay the concerns of local residents in the rising debate over policing.

During a recent City Council meeting, Willey talked about the level of training officers receive, assuring members prepping covers everything from civil right to cultural competencies and more.

Willey added every city officer, with the exception of those just hired, has completed the Standards and Training Board program, adding the city’s motto is they’re there to serve and protect members of the community no matter what the circumstances.

Finally, he sought to assure everyone that incidents are handled on a one-on-one basis, with the commitment being to go the extra mile when possible in the name of maintaining the peace.

The debate over policing is now sweeping the country, with ongoing protests and some violence having recently broken out in the wake of the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.
