West Washington County Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education met Aug. 27.

The meeting of the West Washington County Unit Board of Education was called to Order at 8:01pm by President Kurt Heckert. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance. Members present were Mrs. Cathy Cook, Mr. Daryl Frederking, Mr. Paul Jansen, Mr. Dennis Lintker, Mr. Brett Roe, and Mr. Neal Hackstadt (via teleconference/zoom).
The minutes of the Regular Meeting and Closed Meeting held on July 23, 2020, were presented. It was regularly moved by Roe, seconded by Cook, and carried on a voice vote with all members present voting “aye” that: “The minutes of the July 23, 2020, Regular Meeting and Closed Meeting be approved”.
The bills for the month were presented by Mr. Scott Fuhrhop, as well as Wire Transfer Authorization/Inter Fund Loan. It was regularly moved by Frederking, seconded by Cook, and carried on a roll call vote that: “The bills for the month be approved as presented”. Members voting “aye”: Cook, Frederking, Hackstadt, Heckert, Jansen, Lintker, Roe. Members voting “nay”: None.
There was no Students - Faculty - Parents Correspondence.
The 2020-21 Budget Hearing has been set for September 24, 2020, at 7:45pm.
It was regularly moved by Roe, seconded by Cook, and carried on a voice vote with all members present voting “aye” that: “The Board approves Membership in the Intergovernmental Agreement Resolution for the Career and Technical Education System for the counties of Washington, Clinton, and Marion”. This is the CTE program which includes the school district’s Ag and Computer Ed classes.
During the Principal’s Report, Mr. Leon Spinka indicated that enrollment in the grade school is 238. In addition, he reported that 98% of student were present on this date (August 27, 2020) which is very good. Mr. Spinka is pleased with how the beginning of the school year has been. He stated that the students are wearing their masks, and there have been very few problems.
Mr. Keith Senior explained to the Board that attendance in the Jr -Sr High School is 281, and one additional student will be starting school this week. Mr. Senior is also pleased with the students in Jr - Sr High School, and the start of the school year has been extremely good. In addition, Mr. Senior advised that Remote Learning is going very well for the students who have needed to use it.
Mr. Senior advised the Board that the school district received a $15, 000.00 technology grant that Mr. Josh Berg helped apply for. It will be used to purchase chrome books for students.
During the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Scott Fuhrhop thanked everyone for their cooperation during the start of the school year. Mr. Fuhrhop was very pleased with how well the school year started, and he stated that the bonding of teachers and students in the first two weeks of school has been very important.
Mr. Fuhrhop indicated as well that the Governor will soon be re-evaluating our region, and unfortunately if the Governor makes any changes the school district may get very late notice. However, Mr. Fuhrhop advised the Board, that if necessary, the school district is prepared to move to a hybrid plan/remote learning.
The Board approved dates for the November 2020 and December 2020 School Board Meetings. It was regularly moved by Roe, seconded by Frederking, and carried on a voice vote with all members present voting “aye” that: “The November Board Meeting be set for Monday, November 23, 2020, at 7:30pm, and the December Board Meeting be set for Monday, December 21, 2020, at 7:30pm”.
It was regularly moved by Jansen, seconded by Lintker, and carried on a roll call vote that: “The Board enter Closed Session for the purpose of Suspensions and Personnel, the employment, placement, and compensation thereof, and student Legal Implications”. Members voting “aye”: Cook, Frederking, Heckert, Jansen, Lintker, Roe, and Hackstadt (via teleconference/zoom). Members voting “nay”: None.
Closed Session began at 8:41pm.
Closed Session ended at 8:46pm.
It was regularly moved by Lintker, seconded by Cook, and carried on a roll call that: “The Board approves the re-hiring of the following School Aides for 2020-21: Amy Gibbs, Tabitha Kebel, John Loughland, Carrie McGranahan, Barbara Rueter, Michelle Riechmann, Deneane Wiedwilt, Angie Loy, Elizabeth Overmann, Sara Schwab, Melisa Shubert, Jane Ford, and approves one new Aide to be hired, Jacqueline Markus”. Members voting “aye”: Cook, Frederking, Hackstadt, Heckert, Jansen, Lintker, Roe. Members voting “nay”: None.
Mr. Jim Helton from ISBE was present at the Board Meeting to discuss the Superintendent search with the Board Members. The Board discussed the results of the recent survey that was completed by the School Board, teachers, parents, and the community. Those results were then used to rank the priorities, and the strengths that a Superintendent should possess, which will be used during the Superintendent search.
Mr. Jim Helton, Illinois School Board Association, will facilitate the search, and will recommend the top 6 candidates that apply for the position. Those six candidates, as well as in-house candidates that apply for the Superintendent’s position, will be interviewed by the Board. The first round of interviews has been set for the last week of October.
