Rep. Charlie Meier (R-Highland) said none of the destruction of his community's small business industry has to be.

The Republican blames Democratic leadership for the problems.

"Thanks to the failed leadership by the Democrat majority in Illinois, I am sad to say goodbye to Schutt Sports," Meier posted to Facebook on March 6. "They are leaving Salem due to high taxes and excessive legislation."

Schutt Sports recently informed workers Salem plant about a plan to relocate to Plainfield, Indiana, over the next year, beginning in the spring, WJBD reported.

CEO Robert Erb said the decision to move didn't come easily, and many of the company's employees will be offered the opportunity to relocate to Indiana, WJBD reported.

Erb said the company also has a plant in Litchfield and thought about consolidating the two facilities before parent company Krano's settled on a proposal from Plainfield that offered an incentive package of up to $500,000 to reimburse the company for specific out-of-pocket costs associated with relocating.
