Principals’ Reports:

Mrs. Scheller reported the following:

∙ Students recently participated in the Olympiad. The 3rd– 4th grade team placed 15th out of 29, the 5th– 6th grade team placed 16th out of 27, and the 7th– 8th grade team placed 15th out of 30. Thank you to Focus5 for funding this for our students.

∙ On February 7th, our teachers aides received training on de-escalation strategies. These strategies help regulate students who are at a heightened level. Thank you to Mrs. Kelly and the Macoupin County Health Department counselors for setting this up. The staff members enjoyed it and had a great Q&A session. They are looking forward to more trainings.

∙ The grade school art students’ lantern festival was held on February 8th. Art students created paper lanterns that lit up for the night. Mr. Schulte said it was a decent turn out, but not as well attended as his other art festival nights.

∙ Random Acts of Kindness Day is Friday the 17th. Classroom teachers have been doing activities with their students that promote kindness. Some classes wrote kind words about staff members and handed them out. On Thursday and Friday I will be reading to students in classrooms and complete kindness activities with them. The students will be writing about what they love about school.

∙ The elementary and Jr. High has implemented a staff shout out program where staff members can nominate other staff members for the amazing things they do for our students, staff, and school. Thank you Ms. Seely for doing an amazing job posting the shout outs on Facebook for our community to see what our teachers and staff are doing.

∙ Thank you to Mr. Schulte for his continued work on the student’s leaderboard. Students are nominated by staff and then a picture and narrative is placed on the leader board in the hallway as well as posted on Facebook.

∙ Jr. High 8th grade night for volleyball is on February 23, 2023.

∙ The district wide art festival will be held on March 16, 2023.

Mr. Baumberger reported the following:

∙ Thank you Ms. Spudich and Abigail Lesko for their presentation this evening. The Advanced Biology class is truly providing pathways to a career for our students.

∙ Thank you to Mrs. Osmoe and Ms. Gallia for completing the new door wraps by the gym today.

∙ We recently had a guest speaker, Austin Lanier, present to our 6th– 12th grade students. In his presentation, he touched on the topics regarding anxiety, depression, and drug addiction. I’d like to thank the Academic Foundation for helping us fund this event.

∙ I’d like to thank Park Board for attending some of our varsity events and recognizing the boys and girls participants of the Park Board teams. This is a great way for students to gain interest in our sports.

∙ Last Wednesday the high school girls’ basketball team hosted their senior night.

∙ Tomorrow night is senior night for the boys’ basketball team, high school band members, and high school cheerleaders.

∙ I’d like to thank Focus5 for covering the costs for some high school students to participate in the Olympiad. We are still awaiting the results, but can assume we finished in the middle of the pack.

∙ I’d like to recognize and thank Coach Hancock, our high school cheer coach, for showcasing our little cats program. The group of girls performed during halftime of one of our recent varsity basketball games.

Superintendent’s Report:

Mrs. Kelly reported the following:

A. Informational Items

For our winter sports we had 4 students in wrestling, 11 students in high school boys’ basketball, 10 students in high school girls’ basketball, 28 students in Jr. High volleyball, and 20 students in Jr. High boys’ basketball. For our upcoming spring sports we have approximately 11 students interested in high school baseball, 8 students are interested in high school softball, 30 students are interested in Jr. High track, and about 6 students are interested in high school track so we will not have high school track this school year. B. Roof Update

The roof contract has been signed. Weather permitting, the work should begin soon. C. Legislative Update

Starting July 1, 2023 Faith’s Law will require the district to inquire, with an ISBE template, all new hire’s previous employers if they have previously worked with children. The National Sex Education standards are attempting to not allow districts to have an “opt out” option. We will continuously monitor these updates for the standards.
