City of Centralia Veteran Affairs Committee met May 18.

IV. PUBLIC COMMENT - None

V. MINUTES – April 13, 2023

A motion was made to approve the April 13, 2023, minutes by Mathus and second by Moran. All members present unanimously voted to approve the minutes.

VI. TREASURY REPORT – A motion was made to approve the Treasury Report by Moran and second by Ulen. All members present unanimously voted to approve the report.

VII. ONGOING BUSINESS

1. VA Informational Day

No discussion due to the absence of Vernell Burris and Wayne Sensel

2. Fairview Park – Patriot Updates

It was determined that the poles could be placed in the best manner as recommended by the Public Property Foreman with ground sleeves and poles approximately 10’ high to hold flags. Bill Smith stated that he anticipated they could be placed in the front entrance which was approximately 180’. Cost and feasibility would be reviewed by city staff.

3. 4th of July Parade Discussion

It was determined that Tom Ballagh would be chosen as the Grand Marshall of the 4ht of July Parade. Media would be contacted at a later date and Butch Mathus would be ordering the plaque to present to the Grand Marshall at a future date in the Council the Council Chambers with the committee, media and Mr. Ballagh. Hugh Moran would attempt to contact the Honor Guard for the parade. The parade entry forms were distributed. The form would be added to the city website. Hugh Mroan will also order golf carts for the parade.

4. NEW BUSINESS

None

5. OPEN DISCUSSION

Tammy Stevens shared an article that she is going to request that the Sentinel run to advertise the opportunity to purchase a flag with a veterans name sewn into it.

Butch shared information about the purchase of bands for the flag poles that were found from a vendor for a much less cost than other options. The account will be reviewed for the purchase of the bands to be approved at the next meeting.

Butch Mathus reminded the committee of the Beggars’ Corner dates on June 3rd and June 17th.

Butch Mathus announced that the flag retirement ceremony would be held on September 9th.

Kim Enke announced the planned Memorial Day ceremony to be held in Elmwood Cemetery on May 27th and the need for volunteers to place flags on May 25thin the cemetery at Veterans graves.

6. ADJOURNMENT

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Mulvin with a second by Moran. All members present voted in favor of adjournment and the meeting was adjourned at 4:36 p.m.
