Village of New Baden Board of Trustees met Sept. 3.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Regular Meeting of the New Baden Village Board was held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The meeting was held at New Baden Village Hall, 1 E Hanover St, with a physical quorum of the New Baden Village Board present. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Zurliene at 7:00 pm.

Present and answering to roll call: Mayor Taylor Zurliene; Trustees Chris Locke, Cindi Meredith-Wheelan, Rebecca Schomaker, Christine Jackson, and Larry Thoeming. Absent: Trustee Bob Oster. Staff Members Present: Village Clerk Teri Crane; Village Administrator/ Chief Building & Zoning Official Galen Mahle; Attorney John Long of Bruckert, Behme & Long, P.C.; Public Works Commissioner Tim Deien; and Chief of Police Chuck Mackin. Staff Members Absent: Ambulance Director Allen Gilbert; and Treasurer Casey Weekley.

Consolidated Election: April 1, 2025

Petition Packets for the April 1, 2025, Consolidated Election became available on Tuesday, August 20. Petitions can be filed November 12-18, 2024.

Guest 

Braxton Hovenga, a local Boy Scout, was in attendance to observe the Board Meeting; he is working on his Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge.

Consent Agenda

A motion was made by Trustee Jackson and seconded by Trustee Schomaker to approve the Consent Agenda, which includes the of payment of current invoices, and minutes from the August 5, 2024, regular meeting; the August 19, 2024, regular meeting was cancelled due to lack of business.

Ayes: Trustees Schomaker, Jackson, Thoeming, Mayor Zurliene.

Nays: None.

Absent: Trustees Oster, Locke, Meredith-Wheelan.

A majority of the Board voting aye, the motion carried.

Ordinance: 2024-09-03-A: Declaring 2012 Ford Explorer as Surplus Property

A motion was made by Trustee Schomaker and seconded by Trustee Jackson to approve Ordinance 2024-09-03-A: Declaring One 2012 Ford Explorer as Surplus Property and Authorizing the Village for its Sale. This vehicle was part of the Police Department Fleet. The Village Administrator, Galen Mahle, is authorized to sell the vehicle in such manner as he may designate, including, but not limited to, selling the Property to another public entity.

Ayes: Trustees Schomaker, Jackson, Thoeming, Mayor Zurliene.

Nays: None.

Absent: Trustees Oster, Locke, Meredith-Wheelan.

A majority of the Board voting aye, the motion carried.

Ordinance: 2024-09-03-B: Declaring 2014 Ford F-150 as Surplus Property

A motion was made by Trustee Schomaker and seconded by Trustee Jackson to approve Ordinance 2024-09-03-B: Declaring One 2014 Ford F-150 as Surplus Property and Authorizing the Village for its Sale. This vehicle was part of the Police Department Fleet. The Village Administrator, Galen Mahle, is authorized to sell the vehicle in such manner as he may designate, including, but not limited to, selling the Property to another public entity.

Ayes: Trustees Schomaker, Jackson, Thoeming, Mayor Zurliene.

Nays: None.

Absent: Trustees Oster, Locke, Meredith-Wheelan.

A majority of the Board voting aye, the motion carried.

SLM Water District Appointment

A motion was made by Trustee Jackson and seconded by Trustee Schomaker to approve the appointment of Public Works Commissioner Tim Deien as the Village of New Baden’s representative to the Summerfield, Lebanon, & Mascoutah (SLM) Water District for a 6-year term. Former Public Works Commissioner Ron Renth was still acting as the Village representative; his term expired in August 2024.

Ayes: Trustees Schomaker, Jackson, Thoeming, Mayor Zurliene.

Nays: None.

Absent: Trustees Oster, Locke, Meredith-Wheelan.

A majority of the Board voting aye, the motion carried.

Public Works Dept.: Trailer Jet Purchase

A motion was made by Trustee Jackson and seconded by Trustee Schomaker to authorize the purchase of a Trailer Jet (Model 747-FR2000) from the City of Trenton for $15,000. This item was a budgeted purchase up to $25,000. This Trailer Jet can be used on both the Sanitary Sewers and Storm Sewers to clear blockages. Public Works Commissioner Deien stated that historically Haier Plumbing is called when issues occurred to utilize their jetting equipment.

Ayes: Trustees Schomaker, Jackson, Thoeming, Mayor Zurliene.

Nays: None.

Absent: Trustees Oster, Locke, Meredith-Wheelan.

A majority of the Board voting aye, the motion carried.

Community Issues:

Braxton Hovenga, the Scout in attendance, asked if there were any specific “Community Issues” to be discussed. Mayor Zurliene explained in more detail how the use of the Trailer Jet, that was just authorized to purchase, will assist the Public Works Department. This piece of equipment can be used when residents have drainage issues because a culvert on their property has become clogged with leaves and addressing blockages in the Sanitary Sewer Main.

600 Rose Ct

Trustee Thoeming asked for updates on 600 Rose Ct; he stated that the grass had not yet been cut. Mayor Zurliene stated that Ordinance Violations are being issued on the property and it is being handled by the Courts for those violations.

There being no further business to be brought before the Village Board, a motion was made by Trustee Jackson and seconded by Trustee Schomaker to adjourn the meeting.

Ayes: Trustees Schomaker, Jackson, Thoeming, Mayor Zurliene.

Nays: None.

Absent: Trustees Oster, Locke, Meredith-Wheelan.

A majority of the Board voting aye, the motion carried; the meeting adjourned at 7:16 pm.
