A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Coffeen, Illinois on October 30, 2024. The request was made by us at South Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
We requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, specifically seeking information about both new and active residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023, up until the present day. The details we asked for each permit include its type, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address where the construction is planned or ongoing, and the contractor's name.
The purpose of this request is to gather data that will enable us to report accurately on local government activities in Coffeen. Access to public records such as these is essential for our work in holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
As a media organization disseminating information to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional under the provisions of the FOIA. We await a response from the City of Coffeen regarding this request.
