FOIA Request to Macoupin County Sheriff Department Regarding Inmates with ICE Detainers on February 18, 2025.
As members of South Central Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we have requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. The requested documents are specifically related to persons committed to the Macoupin County Sheriff Department facility that have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.
In addition, we have asked for requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding civil enforcement, which are reportable under the TRUST Act and/or the Illinois VOICES Act. Furthermore, we have sought Immigration Detainers received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, also reportable under these acts.
As part of our mission to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public, access to these public records is essential for us at South Central Reporter. We believe our role in disseminating information qualifies us for a fee waiver as a media professional.
It's important to note that we are members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit Missouri Corporation assisting news media companies and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies. Our goal is leveraging Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to pull back the curtain on government actions and help inform the American electorate.
