Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago. The initiative is aimed at targeting violent criminal illegal immigrants, including gang members, rapists, kidnappers, and drug traffickers who were released under Illinois’ sanctuary state policies.
In 2021, Governor J.B. Pritzker expanded the TRUST Act, which prevents state and local government from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in most situations. This move has faced criticism from Republican lawmakers who argue it limits law enforcement’s ability to address crime related to illegal immigration.
Senator Plummer has voiced concerns about these policies. "He contends that if Governor Pritzker and Chicago leaders refuse to do their jobs, the federal government has both the right and the duty to act." Senator Plummer was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 55th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Darren Bailey.
"Senator Plummer argues that Governor Pritzker’s actions have put Illinois families at risk time and time again."
The launch of Operation Midway Blitz reflects ongoing debate over immigration enforcement between state officials and federal authorities.
