Scores23

About 56 percent of Central A. & M. Middle School students passed annual English language arts assessments in 2017 and 44 percent of students failed, according to a South Central Reporter analysis of the latest Illinois schools report card.

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, is administered to third- through eighth-graders in Illinois, testing them in reading and math based on Common Core standards.

According to Central A. & M. Middle School English language scores, about 46 percent met expectations and 10 percent exceeded them. Students whose results are in either category are considered to be most ready to move on to the next level and are most prepared for college or work.

Another 31 percent approached expectations, while 11 percent partially met expectations and 1 percent did not meet them. Students who scored in these categories are not ready for the next level of schooling, according to the test.

Test results at Central A. & M. Middle School, which enrolled 169 students in 2017, surpassed state averages.

Statewide, 37 percent of students passed the test and 63 percent failed.

Of students statewide who passed, only five percent 'exceeded' expectations.
