Vandalia Community Unit School District 203 students suspended 92 times in a single school year

Vandalia Community Unit School District 203 reported 92 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 92 students during the year. That equates to 6.3 percent of the 1,465 students enrolled.

Of the 45 in-school suspensions, including 35 elementary or middle schoolers and 10 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 16 incidents. There were 15 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 31 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 47 out-of-school suspensions, 32 were given to boys and 15 were given to girls, including 24 elementary or middle schoolers and 23 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 28 incidents. There were nine incidents of unspecified reasons. For 23 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
