Centralia School District 135 students suspended 358 times in a single school year

Centralia School District 135 reported 358 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 358 students during the year. That equates to 26 percent of the 1,379 students enrolled.

Of the 214 in-school suspensions, 161 were given to boys and 53 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 184 incidents. There were 16 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 189 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 144 out-of-school suspensions, 110 were given to boys and 34 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 75 incidents. There were 62 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 63 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
