Gillespie Community Unit School District 7 students suspended, expelled 79 times in a single school year

Gillespie Community Unit School District 7 reported one expulsions and 78 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred two students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 79 students during the year. That equates to 5.9 percent of the 1,342 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with drugs.

Of the 48 in-school suspensions, including 32 elementary or middle schoolers and 16 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 48 incidents. For 33 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 30 out-of-school suspensions, including 18 elementary or middle schoolers and 12 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 25 incidents. There were two incidents of alcohol. For 10 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
