Taylorville Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 27.
Monte and Lucy Siegrist donated two real estate lots to the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Foundation, including one parcel that’s adjacent to the nonprofit hospital and is currently being used as employee parking.
“We wanted to give something back to the hospital,” said Monte, 85. “It’s a small token of our appreciation for their excellent care. So many people there to thank. I wouldn’t even know where to start!”
Between 1956 and 1963, all six of Monte and Lucy’s children were born at Taylorville Memorial (then St. Vincent’s Memorial Hospital). The youngest son, John, spent half of his life at the hospital before succumbing to a childhood illness on his 6th birthday.
“The care we have received there has always been outstanding – warm, personal, loving and caring,” said Lucy, 83. “I always feel God’s presence there.”
Lucy said she also appreciates the convenience of hospital care close to home, especially during times when Monte has required medical assistance. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
The Siegrist family goes back six generations in Taylorville to 1894. Monte established Siegrist Builders when he was 30 and went on to serve as president of the Springfield Area Builders Association. His company helped build more than 600 homes in Taylorville with an additional 400 in the surrounding areas.
He also commissioned and funded “The Last Stop,” a popular life-size sculpture located on the lawn of the courthouse featuring Abraham Lincoln with a pig at his feet – a nod to a well-known story about the famous circuit-riding lawyer arguing a pig-interrupted case in Taylorville.
“I love Taylorville,” Monte said. He and Lucy look forward to construction of the new hospital.
“We always try to look forward to the future,” said Lucy. “At our age, being close to home is important.”
“We are super excited about it,” Monte said about the new hospital. “It’s an important investment in Taylorville.”
