Christian County nixes library rate increase

Christian County rejected both referendums on the Nov. 6 ballot.

County voters were against the Rochester Public Library Proposition to increase the limiting rate: "Shall the limiting rate under the Property Tax ExtensionLimitation Law for the Rochester Public Library District of Sangamon and Christian Counties, Illinois, be increased by an additional amount equal to 0.215% above the limiting rate for the purpose of the establishment, maintenance, and support of a public library for levy year 2017 and be equal to .461444% of the equalized assessed value of the taxable property therein for levy year 2018?"

With 100 percent of the votes counted, 20 were in favor and 44 were opposed.

Christian County also voted against a referendum concerning potential gun control laws: "Should the Illinois General Assembly pass any additional legislation limiting a citizen's right to keep and bear arms as defined by the Second Amendment to the United StatesConstitution?"

With 100 percent of the votes counted, 4,086 were in favor and 8,601 were opposed.
