State government spending in Illinois has increased by nearly 40 percent over the past seven years under Governor JB Pritzker, according to recent statements from state officials. Despite collecting record levels of tax revenue, the state’s expenditures continue to grow, drawing criticism from lawmakers concerned about fiscal responsibility.

Last week, Governor Pritzker signed an executive order directing state agencies to cut up to four percent from their budgets. The order instructs agencies to limit non-essential spending, reconsider hiring decisions, and set aside reserves in case revenue growth slows. In announcing these measures, Pritzker pointed to Washington as a source of the state's fiscal difficulties.

Senator Jason Plummer offered a different perspective on the state’s financial challenges. “The problem lies with state spending,” he said. Plummer noted that earlier this year, Governor Pritzker approved a budget exceeding $55 billion and introduced more than $1 billion in new taxes and other revenue measures affecting Illinois taxpayers and businesses.

Recent policy proposals have included a $1.50 delivery tax on packages, additional service taxes on items such as haircuts, car repairs, and home maintenance, as well as a digital advertising tax impacting small businesses.

While public sector payrolls and programs expand in Illinois, private-sector job growth continues to lag behind neighboring states. Many families face higher living costs amid rising government expenditures.

Plummer emphasized that Illinois’ record revenues indicate the core issue is not insufficient income but rather excessive spending by the state government. He stated: “Families are forced to live within their means every day, but Springfield continues to grow government faster than taxpayers can keep up.”

Plummer was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 55th Senate District in 2023 after succeeding Darren Bailey.
