City of Breese issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.
There are no words to describe all the feelings I have about our local Shop With a Cop Christmas program. Gratitude comes to mind, as does grace and blessed and joy, but those words are all lacking the magical essence of the day. The amount of work that my friend Cian and her staff at Freds put into this program is incredible, they have bake sales and raffles to provide half the funding for our event. The same can be said for our local officers, who not only show up, but go the extra mile to make this event happy and memorable for each child. The police department matches the money raised by Freds to make this happen. Hardee’s provides free fries and drinks with the kids sandwiches, helping us put more of the funding toward the kids. And the kids.these kids just melt my heart. I promise you none of these kids have ever been able to go into a store and buy gifts for their families. It was such a novelty that many of them didn’t know what to do. In the past two years, we’ve served twenty local kids with this program. I’ve watched them purchase pillows and blankets, necessities and fun stuff, but always I’ve seen their beaming smiles and seen them filled with the magic of Christmas. A visit with Santa capped our event, with every kiddo receiving a filled stocking to take home. Even better, the stockings were filled through a project hosted by a local religion class. I am a firm believer that it takes a village, and today my friends, our village showed up strong.
