HSHS ST. JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL BREESE: Free Screenings for Hypertension and Diabetes to be Held July 30

Diabetes test

HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese issued the following announcement on July 2.

HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese welcomes the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois’ KidneyMobile® to the Breese Knights of Columbus Hall on Tuesday, July 30. A series of free kidney and diabetes screenings will be offered starting at 10 a.m. Screenings will continue until everyone is seen or until 2 p.m. – whichever comes first. Attendance is limited, so an appointment is strongly encouraged. Call the hospital at (618) 526-5336 to schedule. Those walking in without an appointment will receive the next available slot.

The free screenings, limited to those 18 years of age and over, will include blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, urinalysis and a blood draw (if necessary). Fasting is not required.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the results with a health care professional and will receive a printed copy to bring to his or her physician. A Spanish interpreter will be available. Refreshments will also be provided.

Each year, kidney disease kills more people than breast or prostate cancer, but while the majority of Americans can recite the common tests for breast and prostate cancer, many do not know the risk factors and tests that could keep them off dialysis and the transplant waiting list. Because kidney disease often develops slowly with few symptoms, it can frequently go undetected until it is very advanced. Simple steps such as controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, keeping a healthy weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking and avoiding excessive use of pain medicine, can help reduce risk.

To schedule a KidneyMobile® screening appointment, contact the hospital at (618) 526-5336. For more information on kidney disease or the NKFI, visit www.nkfi.org.
