HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital Breese issued the following announcement on July 23.
Many advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Yet sadly, many cancer survivors, after surviving their disease, are unable to return to their pre-cancer lifestyle due to lingering effects of the disease and treatment.
HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese and Clinton County YMCA can assist those undergoing cancer treatments through their Oncology Wellness Program, located at the HealthPlex. The Oncology Wellness Program can help improve their quality of care and quality of life from initial cancer diagnosis, through all stages of treatment, and after treatment is completed. This therapy program can help prepare your body before cancer treatment and help you to return to your previous activity level afterwards, reducing the effects of treatment. These services expand to HSHS Holy Family Greenville and HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Highland as well.
There are a variety of treatment options available through St. Joseph’s Oncology Wellness Program:
Pre-treatment Rehabilitation (Prehab) – Ensuring that you are in the best possible condition before beginning cancer treatment, to help speed your recovery and possibly decrease treatment side effects. Prehab includes education regarding exercise, skin care, nutrition, adaptive equipment and community, spiritual and financial resources. In addition, we can develop personalized home exercise programs to maximize your strength, endurance and mobility prior to cancer treatment.
Outpatient Rehabilitation – Providing physical, occupational, speech and aquatic therapy to treat any deficits resulting from cancer treatments or surgeries, maximizing your quality of life and level of function.
Survivor Support and Wellness – Offering proven recommendations to reduce and limit any long-term effects that may arise and affect your physical function and empower you to be as active as possible. For example:
The Healthplex is also home to the nationally recognized “LIVESTRONG” program. The LIVESTRONG program is a free 12-week program lead by YMCA staff that has been specially trained to work with cancer survivors. The program meets twice a week for supervised exercise, focusing on building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, improving confidence and self-esteem, and reducing stress. For questions or more information about the LIVESTRONG program offered by the Clinton County YMCA, please call 618-526-5628 or visit gwrymca.org/clintoncounty.
