Rep. Wilhour Speaks at South Central Middle School: Students Learn About Constitution & State Legislature

State Representative Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) accepted an invitation from 8th grade student, Grayson Hays to speak to his school about what it’s like to be a state representative and ask questions about government. South Central Middle School in Kinmundy hosted Wilhour for a school assembly in their gymnasium.

“I’m appreciative of the opportunity to talk to these young people and help impress upon them how important it is to know about these important documents from our founding fathers and preserving our rights to free speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion,” added Wilhour. “It was nice to come back to South Central and speak in the same gym that I played basketball in when I was student at St. Elmo.”

Rep. Wilhour talked about being a citizen-legislator and the importance of knowing about the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights that are the foundation of our country and our freedoms. Students and teachers asked questions about things such as what it’s like to be a state representative and has he ever met the Governor or President Trump and what his thinks about the impeachment proceedings.

“This was my first time speaking to a student group. I have only really spoken with adults and voters up until now about government and public policy issues,” said Wilhour. “I met Grayson Hays through his dad and Grayson invited me to speak at his school. Working with the 8th Grade Constitution teacher, Mrs. Erica Fox, we were able to find a date that would work.”

Students who would like to be considered for the ‘Page-for-a-Day’ program at the State Capitol should contact Rep. Wilhour’s district office 217-994-9348 or online at repwilhour.com.
