The Salem City Council all voted in favor to open the Family Aquatic Center on time for this summer at its last meeting. The only way the aquatic center would not open is if the state orders pools to remain closed due to COVID-19.

Salem Mayor Sue Morgan stated in the April 20 online Zoom meeting that residents need to have something to do this summer. Morgan and all other council members voted in favor of the center's opening.

City Manager Rex Barbee brought up the aquatic center in the council meeting to discuss some modifications that will need to be done prior to the scheduled opening of the center on Memorial Day.

“We have been battling with some landscaping issues over the last several years and we have removed some of those landscaping items and put in new concrete that will expand the concession area with more tables and that sort of thing," Barbee stated, as reported by WJBD. "We will be putting some fencing up. The new pool lighting is in and effective if you’ve seen it with the lights on, it makes quite a difference."

Barbee said the fencing will separate the kiddie pool and the main pool. The maintenance work will also replace the old ropes and posts as well as a new canvas that will go over the top of the water slide. The estimated cost for this project was projected to be around $12,000 but by working with Americana, the fees dropped to less than $10,000.
