The fuel tax in Illinois is set to rise on July 1 as the state already sees some of the highest pump prices in the nation.

Starting on July 1, the tax on gas will rise from $0.387 per gallon to $0.392 per gallon, which is a change of about half a cent, as detailed on the list of motor fuel tax rates and fees on the Illinois government's website.

"It's hard to stop the Springfield political class' insatiable appetite for your hard-earned money," said Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Fayette) in a Facebook post. "These politicians always talk big about 'families' and the 'middle class.' Talk is cheap, their actions show their real priorities, and workers and families are always in their cross hairs."

Illinois has the 10th highest average price of gas in the state as of June 30, according to AAA gas reports.

The average price as of the end of June was $3.36 cents for a gallon of regular fuel.

"I will continue to stand for policies and ideas that offer opportunity and prosperity for all Illinoisans, and I will always stand against crony capitalism and policies that benefit political insiders at the expense of our families and workers, i.e. the people that pay the bills. Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, and Wisconsin gas stations must get a real kick out of our backwards policies," said Plummer in his Facebook post.
