MINUTES

VETERAN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Thursday, May 12th, 2022

Centralia City Hall – 4:00 pm

I. CALL TO ORDER – 4:01PM the meeting was called to order.

II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

III. ROLL CALL

IV. PUBLIC COMMENT - None

V. MINUTES – April 14, 2022: Motion to approve 1st Mathus 2nd Ulen. All members present voted in favor of approving the minutes with no one opposing.

VI. TREASURY REPORT – Motion to approve 1st Mulvin 2nd Ulen. All members present voted in favor of approving the treasury report as stated with no one opposing.

VII. ONGOING BUSINESS

1. Elmwood Cemetery Maintenance –

a. No new updates other than additional drainage to be added once it dries out. The Cemetery will be mowed & weeded before Memorial Day Service.

2. 2022 Memorial Day Service

a. Everything should be taken care of in time for the event. City staff still needed to determine a musician and speaker, though.

3. VA Informational Day

a. City staff still needs to work on organizing resources to be present for an event. It was suggested to reach out to the KC veterans group for assistance as there has been difficulties getting in touch with our local VA representative.

VIII. NEW BUSINESS

1. Fairview Park – Patriot Updates

i. City staff is on board with getting this done, but the Public Properties Director needs a commissioner to come show him exactly what they want. Smith stated that he would get with the Public Properties Director to show him the memorial improvements.

2. Flag Set Up Around Town

i. May 15th at the Centralia VFW at 7:00AM is the time to meet and put up the flags.

3. 4th of July Parade Planning

i. There was discussion of whether to hold the parade in the afternoon like last year or to revert to the early 10AM time that has previously been done. Mathus thought we had better public turn out when it was held in the afternoon. However, it was mentioned that the afternoon was quite warm for parade participants. Ultimately, the commissioners recommended that the event have a 1PM start time like last year.

ii. It was recommended that someone make a call to Little Egypt sooner rather than later to secure golf carts as there were difficulties last year getting them.

4. Grand Marshall Appointment for 2022 4th of July Parade

i. Vincent Rolves was nominated as the 2022 4th of July Parade Grand Marshall. A motion to approve this nomination was made by Smith and seconded by Mathus. All present voted yes with none voting no. The motion carried and Vincent Rolves was to be contacted by Mathus to see if he was willing to accept the nomination.

IX. OPEN DISCUSSION

X. ADJOURNMENT – A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. 1st Mathus 2nd Ulen. All members present voted in favor of adjourning the meeting with no one opposing.
