Bond County Community Unit School District 2 Board of Education met Jan. 18.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Bond County Community Unit No. 2 held its regular meeting on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, in the BCCU #2 High School Library, 1000 E. State Rte. 140, Greenville, IL.

Board President Randi Workman called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Those present were board members Frey, Gerl, Prater, Reavis, Workman and Zeeb. Others present were Superintendent Wes Olson; Principals Kara Harris, Gary Brauns, Jason Rakers and Eric Swingler; Asst. Principals David Weller and Amy Jackson; PreK and Technology Director Meg Davendonis; Special Ed and Student Services Director Terry Swalley; WGEL Jeff Leidel; and Board Secretary Emily Laesch. Members of the public who signed in were: Susan Corbus and Ernie Oakley.

Board Member Simmonds was absent.

RECOGNITION OF EDUCATION EXCELLENCE

Dr. Olson stated that the Recognition of Educational Excellence was the financial progress that the District has made over the last few years and that he would share more information during the Superintendent Report.

PUBLIC COMMENT

There was no public comment.

REPORTS OF BOARD COMMITTEES

The Policy and Curriculum Committee met on January 11, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. The First Reading of IASB Press Plus Issue 110 policy updates was completed. The committee discussed the possible addition of courses at BCCU #2 High School. The next Policy and Curriculum Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.

The Facilities and Transportation Committee and Finance Committee held a combined meeting at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Bus routes were discussed and an update on the BCCU #2 High School Auxiliary Gym and Cafeteria project was given. The committees reviewed the bills to date for January, 2023 and the Treasurer's Report for December, 2022. The next Facilities and Transportation Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 4:45 p.m.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Superintendent Olson shared the State of the District with the board. This document provides an opportunity for the District to engage with the community and have dialog regarding the District's finances. The State of the District will be posted on the District's website following the Board's review and will allow transparency to the community. Dr. Olson said that the District is in a much better place than it was 5 years ago - financially and academically.

CONSENT AGENDA

Consent agenda items were presented to the board for its approval:

A. Minutes of the December 14, 2022, Truth in Taxation Hearing

B. Open Meeting Minutes of the December 14, 2022, Regular Board Meeting

C. January Expense Reimbursements

Motion by Zeeb, second by Reavis, to approve the Consent Agenda items as presented. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

BILLS

Motion by Frey, second by Zeeb, that the bills for the month of January, 2023 in the amount of $495,026.69 be approved as listed. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

FINANCE REPORT

Motion by Frey, second by Reavis, that the financial report for the month of December 2022, be approved as presented. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

FY24 BUDGET CALENDAR

Motion by Reavis, second by Zeeb, to adopt the FY24 Budget Calendar as presented. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

FIRST READING OF PRESS PLUS UPDATES

Motion by Reavis, second by Frey, that the Board of Education approve the First Reading of Press Plus Issue 110 Updates as presented. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

ADDITION OF HIGH SCHOOL COURSES

Motion by Zeeb, second by Gerl, to approve the addition of a College Algebra/Trigonometry class, Film as Literature class, and Musical Theater 1 & 2 classes at BCCU #2 High School as proposed. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

Motion by Reavis, second by Frey, that the board of education enter into executive meeting at 7:39 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees, specific individuals who serve as independent contractors, or specific volunteers of the District or legal counsel for the District, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee, a specific individual who serves as an independent contractor, or a volunteer of the District or against legal counsel for the District to determine its validity; and the setting of a price for sale or lease of property owned by the District. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

RETURN TO OPEN SESSION

Motion by Zeeb, second by Frey, that the board of education return to open session at 9:21 p.m. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

EXECUTIVE SESSION MINUTES

Motion by Reavis, second by Frey, to approve the Executive Session Minutes from the December 14, 2022 regular school board meeting. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

RESIGNATION

Motion by Zeeb, second by Frey, to accept the resignation of Hannah Dorries, Pre-K Paraprofessional, effective January 20, 2023. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT

Motion by Reavis, second by Frey, to table until the February, 2023 meeting, the approval of the evaluation and updated contract for Dr. Wes Olson, Superintendent of Schools. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

NEW HIRES

Motion by Zeeb, second by Reavis, to hire Kolin Dothager as a Special Education Teacher for the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year, with placement on the salary schedule at M+32, year 17, retroactive to January 5, 2023. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

Motion by Frey, second by Reavis, to hire Julia Brooks as a Special Education Teacher at BCCU #2 High School for the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year, with placement on the salary schedule at B+0, year 1, retroactive to January 5, 2023. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

Motion by Zeeb, second by Reavis, to hire Martin Pruitt as a school bus driver, at the entry level rate found in the GESPA contract. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

VOLUNTEERS

Motion by Frey, second by Zeeb, to approve the following volunteers for the 2022- 2023 school year as listed in Appendix B. Roll call vote: Frey, yes; Gerl, yes; Prater, yes; Reavis, yes; Workman, yes; Zeeb, yes. Motion carried 6-0.

COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD

Board Member Frey acknowledged the loss of Jay Young. He was a strong advocate for both the community and the school district and he will be missed.
