Southwestern Community Unit School District 9 Board of Education met Feb. 6.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Southwestern Board of Education met for a special session on February 6, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at the Middle School Commons in Piasa, Illinois. Andrew Bagley-President, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Roll call showed those members present as: Andrew Bagley, Randy Gallaher, Jenny Hanks, Donna Loy-by phone, Jason Oertel, Jacob Reno, Nicholas Strohbeck, Dr. Kevin Bowman-Superintendent, and Kim Albert

Recording Secretary.

Andrew Bagley-President led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Public Comment: Jason Oertel invited the Board Members to a dinner/meet & greet to be held by the FFA Alumni group on February 21, 2023, at 6pm in the High School cafeteria. The event is being held to introduce and meet the new FFA sponsor, Mr. Tyler Hamilton, as well as a chapter update.

Dr. Bowman presented the board members with information pertaining to the HVAC project for Summer 2023 which would include the High School and Middle School gyms. He explained the Letter of Intent with Trane to get the process started. Alex Metzger, Project Manager from Cordogan Clark was present and answered questions and explained the process of using Trane as the Master Turn-Key. The project cost will be $725,000 and will be funded by grants, ESSER funds, and district funds.

Andrew Bagley made a motion to approve the Letter of Intent with Trane for the HVAC project for Summer 2023 as presented. Jason Oertel seconded the motion to approve.

Roll Call Vote:

Ayes: Bagley, Gallaher, Hanks, Loy, Oertel, Reno, and Strohbeck

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

The board was presented with the bid tabulation results for Brighton North Elementary School-Restroom Renovation Abatement as well as the Middle School Gym. Four companies submitted bids. The lowest bid was submitted by AES, Inc. Jason Oertel made a motion to approve AES for Base Bid Brighton North Restrooms and for Base Bid #2 Middle School Gym or alternate Bid #1 MS Gym Heat. Nicholas Strohbeck seconded the said motion.

Ayes: Gallaher, Hanks, Loy, Oertel, Reno, Strohbeck, and Bagley

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

Jacob Reno made a motion to hire Susan Means as a Bus Rider. Jenny Hanks made the second motion to employ Susan Means.

Roll Call Vote:

Ayes: Hanks, Loy, Oertel, Reno, Strohbeck, Bagley, and Gallaher

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

The board approved reassigning Jennie Strubbe as a Middle School Math teacher after motions were made by Randy Gallaher and Donna Loy.

Roll Call Vote:

Ayes: Loy, Oertel, Reno, Strohbeck, Bagley, Gallaher, and Hanks

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

Jason Oertel made a motion to authorize the Superintendent to post for a Middle School Language Arts teacher. Jenny Hanks seconded the motion to authorize.

Roll Call Vote:

Ayes: Oertel, Reno, Strohbeck, Bagley, Gallaher, Hanks, and Loy

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

Andrew Bagley made a motion to move into closed session with Nicholas Strohbeck seconding the motion.

Roll Call Vote:

Ayes: Reno, Strohbeck, Bagley, Gallaher, Hanks, Loy, and Oertel

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

Time: 7:33pm.

Jacob Reno made a motion to move back into open session with Andrew Bagley making the second said motion.

Roll Call Vote:

Ayes: Strohbeck, Bagley, Gallaher, Hanks, Loy, Oertel, and Reno

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

Time: 7:46pm.

Jacob Reno made a motion to adjourn the meeting with Randy Gallaher seconding the motion.

Ayes: Bagley, Gallaher, Hanks, Loy, Oertel, Reno, and Strohbeck

Nays: None

MOTION CARRIED.

The meeting adjourned at 7:46pm.
