City of Assumption Health Committee met March 21.

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. at Bromwell Lodge by Mayor Derek Page.
Roll call was answered by Alderpersons Smith, Nelsen and Reed. Also present was Mayor Derek Page, Officer Zeitler, Treasurer Angel Palmer and City Clerk Janet Waller.
Present in the audience were Gary Morgan, April Smith, Damien Smith, Jaylen Smith, Teta Morgan, Dana Owens, Jody Mink, Joe Mink, Herbie Palmer, Lexie Rogers, Felicia King, Earl Simmons, Deborah Stoddard, Robert Ashinhurst, Marilyn Ashinhurst, Kim Porter, Cathy Mathias, Stefani Callan, Bob Bantner, Sue Burgess, Ricky Bradshaw, Hayley Brownback, Megan Zeitler, Tricia Stewart, Tessa Giles, Sarah Myer, Erica Snow, Suzette Berner, George Fandrich, Mary Beth Baker, Donny Walden and Julie Holthaus.
Under new business:
Mayor Page informed the audience the Health Meeting is to discuss if the City of Assumption should allow or not allow backyard chickens. The meeting will be kept to 1 hour and he reminded everyone to be respectful of each other and everyone will be allowed 5 minutes to speak. The council will discuss chickens at the April 6 council and a Special Meeting will be held on April 11 for the final vote on chickens.
A 30 minute presentation on backyard chickens was done by Alderperson Smith. A member of the audience asked why have a Special Meeting for the chickens.
It was questioned why the presentation discussed was compared to Champaign and not smaller communities.
The audience asked what about all the ordinance violations now and how will it be with chickens.
Will they be required to have a permit for chickens.
Chickens are noisy and some like to fight.
Chickens will bring more wild animals into town.
Who will be responsible for enforcing the chickens and how will it be enforced. Can you sell the eggs?
Chickens have diseases.
If you want chickens, live outside the city limits.
The dogs will be barking at chickens and what will happen then?
Will you be able to use the city dump for chicken waste?
You can’t put your chicken poop in the garbage, so what will people do with it? Will chickens be required to be registered?
Someone suggested talking to your neighbor if there are chicken problems and not all people are nice.
Chickens are self sufficient.
Who will inspect the chicken coops?
