City of Assumption Finance Committee met July 24

City of Assumption Finance Committee met July 24.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall by Chairman Gary Nelsen.

Roll call was answered by Alderpersons Nelsen, Reed and Workman. Also present was Mayor Page, Treasurer Angel Palmer, Alderperson Smith and City Clerk Janet Waller.

Present in the audience was Felicia King from the Golden Prairie News.

Alderperson Reed made a motion to approve the June 26, 2023 Finance Committee meeting minutes, seconded by Alderman Workman. Motion carried with Alderperson Nelsen, Reed and Workman voting aye and 0 nays.

Video camera had mechanical error and quit recording at 6:50 pm.

Under old business:

Mayor Page updated the committee on 326 N Poplar. The owner would like to turn the property over to the City as they are unable to repair or demolish the house. A title search for liens will be done. There is an outstanding water bill for over $800 and the council will need to make a decision on the outstanding bill. The council will also need to decide if the City receives the property to sell it as is with conditions to demolish the house or if the City will need to demolish the house before selling.

Under new business:

Committee would like an update on the status of 712 E Illinois Street from the Attorney. The School Resource Officer will be sworn in this week.

The committee discussed the old Bond School property regarding the tree on the City sidewalk. 205 N Poplar would like a sidewalk. The committee agreed to place on the agenda.

The council will need to vote on variances for 411 W Second Street for a 3 foot variance for a porch. Also 402 W Illinois will need a variance for a garage.

Mayor Page asked the committee thoughts on possibly disbanding zoning since members are not showing up for the meetings.

Public Comments:

Alderman Smith addressed the Street Supt Darin Damery and raises. A lengthy conversation on raises was discussed. Alderman Smith will share the information with the Street Supt.

The public discussed Waste Management raising rates and would like to know if we have found another garbage company for next year.

Finance Committee meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
