Internal Medicine Physician Doug Kabbes, MD, is expanding the Sarah Bush Lincoln (SBL) Weight Management Program to the SBL Bonutti Clinic in Effingham. Dr. Kabbes, who has personal experience with weight challenges from his childhood, aims to support individuals in achieving their weight goals through this program.

“Every day as a physician, I see people with chronic health conditions that could be improved with weight loss. But losing weight is easier said than done,” Dr. Kabbes admits.

The program's expansion comes amid rising concerns about obesity rates. “Some 73 percent of our population is overweight or obese, and the number climbs every year," he noted. "Being overweight contributes to the development of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, hypertension, depression, liver disease and cancer, much of which can be either cured or alleviated with weight loss.”

Dr. Kabbes highlighted new medications on the market that have shown promise for weight management. Injectable medications such as Saxenda and Wegovy were initially developed for diabetes but are now being used effectively for weight control. Additionally, Mounjaro is expected to receive approval for weight loss soon.

As part of his commitment to addressing obesity-related issues, Dr. Kabbes is pursuing board certification by the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He collaborates with the SBL Weight Management Program to offer a comprehensive approach that includes exercise and nutrition plans, prescription medication options encouraging weight loss, and bariatric surgery like sleeve gastrectomy.

Reflecting on his own journey with weight management during his youth through exercise and diet changes, Dr. Kabbes stated: “When I was young I was an overweight kid...I realize the difficulties others may have especially in achieving long-term results...I hope to offer people help and most importantly hope through our Weight Management Program.”
