The Sarah Bush Lincoln Fayette County Hospital (SBLFCH) has introduced new diagnostic imaging technology, enhancing its capabilities in breast cancer detection and bone density measurement. As of July, the hospital offers 3D mammography with a 3Dimensions system by Hologic, designed to provide high-quality images for radiologists and improve patient comfort during mammograms.

Rena Myers, SBLFCH Imaging Services Director, expressed enthusiasm about the technological upgrade: “We’re excited about the enhanced technology. In addition to new equipment, the mammography exam room has been renovated and can easily accommodate wheelchairs or anyone with mobility issues.” Previously limited to two days a week via a mobile unit, 3D mammograms are now available at the hospital from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4:30 pm.

Screening mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40 if they are at average risk for breast cancer. Women aged 35 to 40 may also be screened based on individual risk factors and family history. Early detection through screening aims to identify breast cancer before it becomes palpable.

In addition to advancements in mammography, SBLFCH has updated its DEXA scanning technology with Hologic's Horizon DXA system. This scan measures bone density using X-ray beams targeted at areas like the hip and spine. Osteoporosis is responsible for over 8.9 million fractures annually worldwide; hence early detection through such scans is crucial.

Amanda Walk joins the Diagnostic Imaging team as a seasoned technologist with over two decades of experience in various imaging modalities including mammograms, X-rays, CTs, and DEXA scans. She is well-known within Fayette and Bond Counties despite being a recent addition to the team.

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month this October, patients receiving mammograms will have an opportunity to win a gift basket featuring a soft-sided cooler filled with assorted items.

Appointments for both mammogram and DEXA scan services can be made by calling 618-283-5466.
