Consulting behavioral health expert Mary Hammond, MS, LCPC, highlights various strategies for maintaining mental well-being amid changes in lifestyle and routines.
Hammond emphasizes the importance of social engagement, stating, "It is vital that we continue to be involved in supportive relationships." These connections can be found through various avenues such as church, family, friends, or community activities.
Learning new skills is another focus for Hammond. She explains, "We can continue to learn something each day," which can foster personal growth and bolster self-esteem. She suggests activities like learning new words, subjects, crafts, or even musical instruments, and encourages that "It’s NEVER too late!"
Physical movement is also crucial, according to Hammond. She encourages creativity in exercise, listing activities such as walking, stretching, and chair dancing to help individuals "get off the couch."
Hammond also advises being mindful of nutritional choices, suggesting small changes like choosing fruit over cookies and maintaining hydration. "If you drink that cup of coffee also drink a glass of water," she recommends.
Sleep and relaxation are essential components of mental health. Hammond suggests unplugging from electronic devices before bed and reflecting on daily gratitude, stating, "Try turning off cell phones and other devices 45 minutes prior to going to bed."
Lastly, she underscores practicing self-compassion and being kind to oneself during challenging times. Hammond poses the question, "What would you say that is comforting and supportive to this person? ***Say that to yourself!***"
