State Senator Steve McClure of Springfield has successfully passed legislation focused on easing regulatory demands for disabled individuals in Illinois. The bill, known as Senate Bill 1256, seeks to address the requirements surrounding the issuance of disability plates or parking decals.

Currently, individuals with disabilities, or their representatives, must submit a doctor's letter annually to the Secretary of State confirming the disability. This is necessary even if the disability is permanent. According to McClure, the law imposes unnecessary bureaucracy on those with permanent disabilities.

“There is no reason that people with permanent disabilities should be forced to get new documentation from their doctor every single year just to use accessible parking spots,” said Senator McClure. “This is a common-sense bill to cut through unnecessary red tape to make our state laws less burdensome for people with disabilities.”

The proposed legislation aims to extend the validity period of the certification to five years and includes a provision allowing licensed physical therapists to certify the applications. This change is intended to reduce the frequency of doctor visits and associated costs.

The Illinois Senate approved the bill on April 9, 2025. The legislation currently awaits further consideration in the House.
