Last week, Governor Pritzker signed Senate Bill 8 into law. The new legislation shortens the deadline to report a lost or stolen firearm from 72 hours to 48 hours, effective January 1, 2026. Individuals who fail to meet this reporting window may face significant fines and risk losing their Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card. Repeat violations could lead to more severe penalties.

Senate Republicans have criticized the measure, stating it targets responsible gun owners rather than addressing violent crime. They argue that many gun owners store firearms in places such as safes, cabinets, or vehicles that are not checked daily, making compliance with a 48-hour rule difficult.

Senator Plummer commented on the legislation: "This new law is just another one-size-fits-all mandate that turns law-abiding citizens into offenders while failing to crack down on actual criminals."

Plummer was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 55th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Darren Bailey.
