Illinois has been ranked as the state with the highest property tax rate in the nation. The Tax Foundation reported that Illinois homeowners paid an average effective property tax rate of 1.83% in 2023. This figure is higher than those in neighboring states, which has contributed to residents leaving Illinois.

The announcement follows Governor J.B. Pritzker's approval of the largest state budget in Illinois history, which included nearly $1 billion in new taxes, fees, and temporary measures.

Senator Plummer commented on the situation: "The Governor’s agenda is crushing working families, piling even more taxes onto Illinoisans. Instead of making life more affordable, Pritzker and his allies are choosing to spend more, tax more, and ignore real reforms that could actually bring relief to homeowners."

Plummer, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2023 to represent the state's 55th Senate District, succeeding Darren Bailey.
