As the harvest season progresses in Illinois, farmers are spending long hours in fields, resulting in increased movement of large agricultural equipment on rural roads. Drivers are being urged to exercise caution due to the prevalence of slow-moving tractors and combines during this period.
A study from the University of Illinois-Chicago found that between 2018 and 2023, there was an annual average of nearly 530 crashes involving agricultural vehicles on Illinois roadways.
State Senator Jason Plummer commented on the importance of safety during this time. "Harvest season is a time to recognize the hard work of our farmers, but also a moment to increase caution on rural roads." He added, "He urges motorists to slow down, give large equipment plenty of space, and for farmers to use visible lights and signals so everyone can stay safe during this harvest season."
Plummer, a Republican, began representing Illinois' 55th Senate District in 2023 after succeeding Darren Bailey.
