Following the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Republican State Senator Neil Anderson has introduced a bill to establish “Charlie Kirk Day” in Illinois. The proposed legislation, Senate Bill 2694, seeks to amend the State Commemorative Dates Act so that September 10 would be recognized each year as a day honoring Kirk.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while preparing to speak at Utah Valley University. Authorities arrested Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, who has been charged with his murder.
State Senator Jason Plummer commented on the proposed day of recognition: "By establishing a day of recognition, Illinoisans will have a chance each year to reflect on Kirk’s values, his contributions to public discourse, and the continuing importance of protecting our constitutional rights."
Senate Bill 2694 has been filed with the Illinois General Assembly and is awaiting committee assignment.
Plummer is a Republican who was elected to represent Illinois' 55th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Darren Bailey. More information about Plummer's election can be found at https://www.ilga.gov/senate/Senator.asp?GA=103&MemberID=3179.
