Illinois is facing a projected budget deficit of $267 million for fiscal year 2026, according to a recent report from the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (GOMB). The report also indicates that if current trends continue, the deficit could increase to $2.2 billion by fiscal year 2027.
Governor JB Pritzker has raised state spending by nearly 40 percent since taking office, leading to record-high budgets. This rise in expenditures comes despite concerns voiced by Republican lawmakers about the sustainability of such increases.
The Governor has introduced several new programs and initiatives, including funding for non-citizens. However, these efforts have raised questions about the long-term stability of Illinois’ finances. Republican legislators argue that ongoing high spending and reliance on temporary revenue streams are putting the state at risk.
State Senator Jason Plummer commented on the situation: "The growing deficit is the latest example of the dangers of overspending and misplaced priorities in Springfield." He added that Illinois needs to control its spending, prioritize fiscal responsibility, and protect working families from potential negative impacts resulting from continued budget mismanagement.
Plummer was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 55th Senate District in 2023, succeeding former senator Darren Bailey.
