October is being observed as Manufacturing Month in Illinois, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the state’s manufacturing sector and its role in the economy.

The Illinois Manufacturers’ Association (IMA) reports that more than 662,000 people are directly employed by manufacturers in Illinois. The organization also states that manufacturing supports $580 billion in annual economic impact, making it the largest industry sector in the state and one of the fastest-growing industries in the Midwest.

According to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Illinois is ranked as the fourth-largest manufacturing state nationally. There are over 14,000 manufacturing companies operating within a variety of sectors across Illinois.

Senator Plummer commented on the significance of this industry for communities throughout the state: “From small, family-run businesses to large employers, manufacturers provide good-paying jobs, strengthen local economies, and create opportunities for future generations.”

Earlier this month, IMA and the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center conducted an eight-day bus tour called Makers on the Move. The tour was designed to celebrate Manufacturing Month and highlight manufacturers throughout Illinois. More information about tour stops can be found by clicking here.

Plummer, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois’ 55th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Darren Bailey.
